Rate of Accomodation in New Zealand

Like most immigrants, you will start in New Zealand by renting an apartment or staying in a hostel.

Apartments

Most rental properties are unfurnished, apart from an oven, a laundry facility and things like curtains and carpet. The landlord does not have to provide a heater, so you will usually have to provide your own. Owing to New Zealand’s climate, some houses, particularly those that don’t get a lot of direct sun during the day, may have problems with dampness. It’s best to see the house before you sign a tenancy agreement (also known as a lease).

Following are weekly average rental prices.

Charges and fees

When you agree to rent a property you usually need to pay:

  • Brokerage if applicable - should not not be more than 1 weeks rent
  • Bond - similar to a deposit. This is equal to 4 weeks rent. The bond amount is deposited with the Bond Center, part of Tenancy services. The bond is refunded to you when you leave the property unless you have not paid rent or have caused some damage.
  • Rent - is usually paid fortnightly and the amount of rent paid varies between suburbs and cities. The landlord may ask you to pay up to two weeks’ rent in advance. This means you pay the next rent two weeks later, and so on until the end of the tenancy.

Note : The landlord cannot increase the rent within six months of either the start of the tenancy or the last rent increase.

Hostel accomodation

This is perfect when you are traveling alone and will need to save expenses till you can settle comfortably in New Zealand.

New Zealand hostels are extremely clean, functional and conveniently located. These offer a choice of single room and sharing (2,4,6 to a room). Common facilities are TV, kitchen, internet, bathroom etc. Some may offer breakfast and tea.

Most hostels quote rent on a daily basis and offer discounts for extended stays. The rent varies from NZ$ 20/- to NZ$ 30/-.

One NZ $ = Rs.45.00/- (approx.)
