According to Statistics New Zealand, the number of New Zealanders arriving in Australia this year has set a new record.
The latest visitor figures show that the effect of the Rugby World Cup is over and net migration to Australia has reached a record high. The number of Kiwis migrating to Australia has been estimated at about 35,800 in the year to November, surpassing the previous annual record of 35,400 in December 2008.
The statistics also revealed nearly 1000 New Zealanders a week made a one-way trip across the ditch this year, with 50,115 New Zealander choosing to live in Australia on a permanent or long-term basis in the year to November.
New Zealanders are lured to Australia by better job opportunities, where Australian recruiters offer large pay cheques in industries such as mining and farming to attract migrants.
Russo Recruitment general manager Denise Love stated that the mining industry was constantly looking for new employees and New Zealanders were filling many of those positions.
"A recent trend we have seen is that migrant sending resumes before leaving New Zealand in attempts to secure work in the mines on their arrival," she said.
Ms. Love added that New Zealanders coming to Australia were diverse. It is not only young people who are making the move but whole families are coming over for the chance to work in the booming industry.
Agri Labour Australia general manager Casey Brown said his agriculture company attracted huge numbers of applications from New Zealanders looking for work on farms.
"We use a New Zealand network for some positions and we have received up to 200 applicants for some advertisements," he said.
Since the introduction of the Trans-Tasman Travel Agreement in 1973, Australians and New Zealanders have been able to travel to and reside in each country without visa approval. However, since February 2001, New Zealand immigrants to Australia can no longer access government services such as Centrelink and welfare is not offered.
