The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has revised its projections on the number of international students in Australia after the implementation of Stage 1 of the Knight Review recommendations.
The projected international student numbers in September's "Outlook for Net Overseas Migration" are much higher than figures estimated two months earlier.
It is expected that most of the recommendations from the Knight Review of the student visa program will be implemented by mid 2012, with a post-study work visa to be introduced by March 2013. Migration numbers, especially long term overseas students who stay in Australia at least 12 out of 16 months will be affected by these changes from late next year.
"From September 2013 the forecasts show a small but steady increase in net student numbers, as more students arrive and proportionally less students leave", says the report.
According to Monash University researcher Bob Birrell, these recommendations will result in a boom in overseas students lured by years of at least part-time access to the Australian labour market.
Australian universities also indicated that the recommendations would boost student numbers, mainly because of the fast tracked visa application process.
DIAC now estimates 6000 more long term international students will study in Australia during 2011 than its July projections. This will increase the number of long term overseas students by 22,000 in 2014-15.
