The Australia's economy, especially the booming natural resources sector is now facing a shortage in skilled labour market. A plan to train tens of thousands of Indian graduates is under consideration by officials in Australia and India to help Australia solve this problem.
Australian and Indian officials, as well as tertiary institutions and resources companies in both nations have been worked together to discuss about the idea of establishing Australian's training system. About 100,000 Indians, mostly in Indian universities would be educated by Australian trainers, with up to 30,000 qualified graduates then could immigrate and be recruited to work in Australia's resources sector.
Australia has also indicated that it wants to open an Australian Mining University in India, with campuses in different cities.
According to Australia's senior trade official in India, Peter Linford, any Indians who come to Australia under the scheme would be employed on the same conditions as Australians, subject to immigration rules.
As the Australian resources industry expands, demand for skilled labour has become higher up to 2.4 million by 2015. It is predicted that Australia's economy will see a massive skills shortage. To help Australia increase its skilled workforce to meet the demand of the country's resource boom which is driven by strong Asian, especially Chinese demand, many economists believe that the solution to Australia's labour market problem is skilled immigration from overseas.
"We're an immigrant nation. A quarter of all Australians were born overseas. Forty per cent of us has a parent born overseas and it is very, very important that given we are such a high growth country with very, very high potential that we continue to import the labour we require to support the economy," Christopher Joye, the chief executive of Rismark International, a financial advice company, said.
