Along with the Australian government's proposal to simplify visitor visas, a discussion paper for public comment on that matter has recently been released by the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen MP, and Minister Assisting on Deregulation, Senator Nick Sherry.
According to Mr Bowen, the Australian government has proposed to simplify visitor visas as a step after its recent commitment to streamline temporary work visas. The commitment, under the government's Better Regulation Agenda, includes a target of 50 per cent reduction in the number of Australian visa types and visa subclasses by 2015.
"We are undertaking broad public consultation on the visa simplification process, to ensure we consider the impact of any changes on the community," said Mr Bowen.
"This streamlining will be achieved by relocating certain short-stay work entitlements and by consolidating common regulatory requirements," Senator Sherry added.
Under the Australian visitor visa discussion, the visitor visa program is proposed to be simplified by a suggestion on moving all short-stay (non business visitor) work activities from the current visitor program to the new visa category – the "unsponsored short-stay visa", which formed part of the temporary work visa proposal. In addition, the number of the types of visitor visas is also planned to be reduced from nine to four.
"The Government is planning to achieve further simplification in this area by standardising similar regulations and removing duplicate regulation," Senator Sherry emphasised.
Before any decisions are made, individuals and parties who are interested in contributing to this proposal are encouraged to read the proposal and provide their comments until 13 May 2011.
