$38.5 million will be spend in the next financial year on services to help refugees and migrants settle into their new communities, according to an announcement made by Australian Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, and Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator Kate Lundy.
The announcement stated that a total of 179 new projects delivered through 148 organisations would be funded under Government's Settlement Grants Program (SGP) from July 1, 2011. The SGP program is aimed at helping new Australian immigrants become self-reliant and acquire "crucial skills" to contribute to the Australian economy.
According to Mr Bowen, the increasing funds for this important program will make a real difference for new arrivals, assist them to "successfully settle in the community and build rewarding lives in Australia".
"Projects funded under the program help refugees and migrants make the transition to their new Australian life by building on their existing skills and equipping them with the tools they need to become self-reliant" he stated.
Senator Kate Lundy agreed with the minister's statement, adding that there were many innovative projects being funded this program, which would make a very real difference to the lives of the new immigrants in Australia.
"The services provide practical assistance to people who are starting new lives in Australia, help create valuable links to the wider community, and empower migrants and refugees to become self-reliant," Lundy said.
