The increase in demand for overseas trade workers to fill skills shortages in resources industry has resulted in the significant increase in the number of approved 457 visas in this year so far.
The 457 visa program in this year has seen its highest record since the global financial crisis. The total primary 457 visas applications of this year so far has been 42,872, which includes 4,200 applications submitted in April 2011. This number is 4000 higher than the total number in 2009 – 2010, and 37 percent higher than the corresponding period last year.
According to a spokesman for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), the number of 457 visas applications has increased because of an improved economic environment and increasing employer demand for overseas workers to fill skills vacancies.
The 457 visa is a temporary work visa that allows employers to sponsor overseas workers to fill nominated skilled positions. Employers, especially in the construction and mining sectors, are now facing with the skills shortage, and this program is providing an important channel for them to hire overseas skilled workers. More than 18,500 500 organisations currently employ overseas workers, with about 70 per cent of workers being employed in small and medium-sized businesses.
"The number of trade workers and technicians coming to Australia under the 457 program is up about 70 per cent compared with the same period last year," the spokesman said. "In this program year to April, there were 4731 visas approved for construction workers and 2777 visas approved for mining workers, which represents an increase of 79 per cent and 43 per cent respectively."
