The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has announced on 2 April that the government will lower international student visa assessment levels for 38 countries across one or more subclasses.
The Australian government usually carries out periodical reviews on student visa assessment levels and makes necessary adjustments in order to reflect changing immigration risk outcomes. The government has recently made a decision to lower some student visa assessment levels as a result of a 2010 review of the student visa program by DIAC.
According to a DIAC spokesman, prospective students and their families should be aware that due to these changes, the minimum evidentiary requirements that they need to be granted a student visa will be lowered for the selected countries and education sectors.
Under the changes, applications for student visas may require less documentary evidence to support their claims for the grant of a student visa. Applicants may only be required to present evidence of English language proficiency, financial capacity and academic qualifications.
The ability for a former overseas student in Australia to obtain permanent residence, however, has not been affected by the reductions to assessment levels. "While many international students apply for permanent residence when they complete their studies, this is an entirely separate process and there is no guarantee that, on the basis of having held a student visa, a person will meet the requirements to be granted permanent residence." said the spokesman.
In addition, the spokesman explained that the skilled migration program will continue to change to meet the needs of Australia's economy, and there is no particular course that guarantees a permanent visa. Therefore, students should not make education choices solely with their expectation to achieve a specific migration result.
