The introduction of biometrics program with tighter, more technologically advanced immigration controls for visa applicants in new countries has been announced by Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Biometric collection for Australian Visa applications will be extended to Syria, Malaysia, Lebanon, Kenya, Jordan and France. As part of the visa process, applicants in these countries will need to provide digital facial photographs and fingerprint scanning for identification purposes.
Bahrain, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Zimbabwe are the latest additional countries to the program since it was commenced in December 2010.
According to Chris Bowen, Australian minister of Immigration and Citizenship , the program was designed to widely use in the international community as an effective tool to manage visa and immigration processes, improve identity management and combat fraud.
“Australia is working closely with like-minded governments and international organizations to better manage identity, migration and border security processes. Collecting biometrics further strengthens Australia’s border security and identity checking processes and will assist my department to verify the identity of visa applicants in any future visa encounters” said Mr. Chris Bowen
Aim to share biometric collection facilities, an agreement between Australia and UK Border Agency has also been signed.
The Biometrics collection for Australian visa applicants will commence in Syria and Malaysia in April, and in Kenya, Jordan, Lebanon and France throughout May.
