The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) will be increasing fees of a number of visa subclasses as part of the new federal budget.
A number of visa application charges will be increased by as much as 15 percent. The increase, which will take effect on 1 July, is aimed at helping offset the wider costs associated with the operation of the migration and temporary entrant program.
This increase in visa application charges will not apply to:
- Australian tourist visas;
- Australian student visas;
- Second instalment investor retirement visas;
- Second instalment contributory parent visas (which are increased in line with health, aged care and social security costs instead of by CPI); and
- Humanitarian protection visas lodged in Australia, which are charged at a rate of $30 and not indexed.
While the changes in visa fees have not been officially announced, there have been some projections of how much the new fees could be for the Permanent Skilled Migration and Permanent Family Migration subclasses. The Permanent Skilled Migration visa is currently $2,575 and could be increased to as much as $2,961 while the Permanent Family Migration which is currently $1,735 could go up to $1,995.
