The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has planned to undertake an evaluation of the Professional Year program in 2011-12 to assess its achievements and to identify potential improvement.
The Professional Year, which is available to Engineers, Accountants and IT Professionals, is a structured professional development program combining formal learning and workplace experience. The program may assist graduates to find employment and provides 5 points towards meeting the Points Based Skilled Migration pass mark.
Its aims are to help participants be familiar with the norms and values in Australian workplace and employment market, to teach them how to communicate effectively with colleagues, managers and clients, and to include an internship (work experience) to educate participants about all aspects of work practices in an Australian company.
According to DIAC, an evaluation of the Professional Year program will be conducted in 2011-12 to assess if it is achieving its original objectives and also identify potential improvements to the program. DIAC intends to undertake the evaluation process openly and transparently by giving the opportunity for all key stakeholders who are involved in or affected by the evaluation to contribute in a meaningful way.
Accordingly, DIAC will request current and past Professional Year students to complete a survey with basic demographic information and specific input regarding each individual's Professional Year. All responses are anonymous and will not affect the results of any current or future visa applications or other dealings with DIAC.
The collected information will form a discussion paper which is expected to be completed in early 2012.
