South Australia will need more medical staff in the next five years due to retirements of approximately 25 per cent of doctors.
The President of the Australian Medical Association SA is calling on the South Australia government to fund new places for training and internship in Australia. It means that any skilled medical professionals immigrating to Australia could be in high demand.
Commenting on the situation, Mr President Peter Sharley said, "We have been falling behind for a very long time.... the State Government here has guaranteed intern positions for the next couple of years, but after that students graduating don't have that assurance".
In 2011 approximately 245 medical students are expected to graduate and among of those, 207 are Australian permanent residents while 38 are migrant students.
