The Victorian State Government has launched the 2013 round of the Victorian International Research Scholarships for top-performing international scholars to complete their PhD at one of Victoria's universities.
The Victorian International Research Program, which is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and universities, provides the highest performing international students with the opportunity to come to Australia to complete their PhD. According to John Butler, Victoria's Commissioner to the Middle East and North Africa, under the Government's Victoria Leader in Learning initiative, AUD $20,000 will be provided annually for three years for each scholarship which, together with support provided by the host university, are valued at AUD $90,000 per PhD candidate.
The Coalition Government is committed to attracting the best and the brightest to study in Victoria and is very keen to see participation from the UAE and wider Middle East region. A four-year Victorian International Research Scholarship program (valued at AUD $1.2 million) is a key component of the Victoria - Leader in Learning initiative to attract top international students to study in Victoria.
Mr Butler added that the PhD scholarship programme has attracted high-performing international scholars to Victoria from many parts of the world over recent years. "Victoria is a world leader in research and our leading-edge research facilities, world-renowned medical institutes and state-of-the art technology platforms make this state the ideal place for research scholars to come from all over the world."
Victoria has a diverse multicultural society, which is largely because of the part played by international students. The Victorian Government hopes to see the Leader in Learning programme continue to contribute to Victoria's diversity and help expand the state's brand around the world.
Victorian universities will nominate their top international students and applications will be assessed by a panel of experts. Students should contact their preferred Victorian university for more information. Recipients of the 2012 scholarships will be announced in the new year.
