Government reviews of many visa classifications are believed to bring about benefit to Australian tourism. This move can keep Australia competitive in the tourism industry and create a better environment for international visitors to Australia.
"There are currently too many roadblocks to Australia as a tourist destination including the rising Australian dollar, increasing fuel surcharges, the Passenger Movement Charge, along with the cost and complexity of getting a visa, so we welcome any changes the Government can make that will ease this burden to our visitors," the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) managing director Felicia Mariani said.
The Government reviews on Australian travel visas have been currently underway. These reviews will also examine the Working Holiday Visa, Student Visa and general holiday visas in order to keep Australian tourism competitive.
ATEC has argued for changes to the eligibility and conditions of the international student visa in its contribution to a National Tourism Alliance (NTA) submission on the Strategic Review of Student Visas.
International students account for 36 per cent of the $17.8 billion tourists spend in Australia annually. They also contribute to the economy through employment and labour support for the tourism industry. The student visa review comes when there are concerns about the decrease in the number of international students coming to study in Australia. The review will assess the efficacy of existing threshold requirements for student visa applicants, including English language proficiency, financial capacity and previous education level.
"The move towards simplifying our visa categories is one action the Government can take to keep the 'Welcome' mat out there and create an environment that makes us more competitive on the global stage," said Ms Mariani, "Australia needs to ensure its competitiveness by providing procedures and visa charges that are in line with other competitor destinations."
The reviews will be submitted to the government in mid 2011.
