All Australian visa holders whose visa status might be affected by the grounding of the Qantas fleet are now encouraged to contact their nearest Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) office for support.
According to a DIAC's spokesman, there could be a number of people visiting Australia with visas which may expire while the Qantas fleet is grounded. Assistance would be required to these travellers to allow them to remain in Australia lawfully until alternative arrangements could be made for them to depart.
"This is especially relevant for people attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth," said the spokesman.
The spokesman indicated that only a small number of visitors are likely to be affected.
"While the vast majority of visitors to CHOGM will be unaffected, there could be a small number of people who will need to contact the department for visa assistance" he added.
Those concerning about their visa status should contact their local DIAC office or call 131 881 for assistant during business hours.
