The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has recently released a report on the Working Holiday Maker visa program that shows an increase in the number of visa grants under this program this year.
According to the report, in 2010-11, the Work and Holiday visa (Subclass 462) program grew by 0.3 percent. Chile, Thailand and the U.S. had the highest increase in the number of applicants who were granted work and holiday visas, with the visa grant growth were respectively +15%, +5.9% and +1.1%.
In 2010-11, the combined Working Holiday visa (Subclass 417) program (first and second) grew by 5.5 percent overall, with an 8.3 percent increase of the first Working Holiday visa program and an 11.1 percent decrease of the second Working Holiday visa program. For the first Working Holiday visa program, the most notable visa grant growth has been seen within the country caseloads of Ireland (+87.4%), Taiwan (+41.0%), Italy (+14.9%) and Hong Kong (+14.5%). For the other program, the most notable visa grant declines have been seen within the country caseloads of Ireland (-31.0%), the Republic of Korea (-22.6%), Japan (-18.7%) and Sweden (-18.3%).
Except for the year 2009-10, the program has steadily grown each year for the last decade. As the report indicated, the figure, which largely appears to be associated with the wider global economic situation in 2010-11, marks a return to positive growth from the uncharacteristic decline in visa grants experienced in 2009-10.
Starting from 1975, the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program is aimed at improving closer ties and cultural exchange between Australia and partner countries, with particular emphasis on young adults. Australia has an overarching bilateral agreement, usually in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, with each partner country. Of the 28 partner countries, 19 are Working Holiday (Subclass 417) visa agreements, and nine are Work and Holiday (Subclass 462) visa agreements.
