There were more than 16,000 Indonesian applicants for Australian visitor visas in the seven weeks leading up to Idul Fitri, according to news released on September 2, 2011, setting a new record.
Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Greg Moriarty expressed his delight in the news. He said that it was such an honour to be able to meet growing demand for Indonesians visiting Australia especially for the Idul Fitri, a Muslim holiday.
Despite the rise in Indonesians seeking to get Australian Visas, the embassy processed Australian tourist visas within five days and Australian business visas within three days in 98 percent of cases.
The data from the embassy's immigration service also revealed that more than nine out of ten visitor visas lodged in Jakarta were granted. Mr. Moriarty added that the number of Indonesians applying for Australian visas has risen by 10 percent since this time last year.
With regards to the number of Indonesian visitor visas, Mr. Moriarty said that the embassy had received over 58,000 applications so far this year. In 2010, there were about 123,890 Indonesian visitors to Australia, up by around 14 percent in 2009.
