The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will no longer hold a monopoly in the Australian international education market with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) announcing it will now accept English language test options from other providers.
Currently, IELTS, which is jointly owned by Australia's IDP and British Council, is used to demonstrate English language proficiency for certain student visa applicants and all skilled visa applicants.
From November 5, 2011, DIAC will accept English language test scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Pearson's PTE Academic test and the Cambridge English Advanced test for student visa application purposes.
The international education industry in Australia has long been asking for the opening up of the English language testing system. DIAC first initiated the review of the English testing system in 2008. In May 2011, Australia's Minister for Immigration Chris Evans announced significant changes to the system. DIAC and other test providers have worked together to determine various standards of English language proficiency.
