So said federal MP for Brisbane and shadow parliamentary secretary for citizenship and settlement Teresa Gambaro at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association conference on Tuesday.
According to Ms Gambaro, "Overall we have the needs for skilled labour and that remains a very high priority".
Despite recent recruitment drives by the Western Australian Government looking for skilled workers from Britain, Minister Gambaro believes all commonwealth countries can do more to assist migrants settle in their new country.
Nations should develop strategies to help address negative public perceptions (about migrants), according to Will Day, representative of The Ramphal Centre, an independent organisation established to help Commonwealth nations with policy issues.
"We think that heads of government or governments should concentrate on better managing an inevitable process, which offers many more opportunities than risks and they need to move the balance of public debate of national policy on migration, from policing to management," Mr Day said.
26 Australian delegates of 600 from 137 Commonwealth parliaments join the London conference, which is considered as a discussion platform for issues affecting the countries.
