The Minister for Australian Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has welcomed Singapore's new, low-cost carrier into the country's air-travel market, which will make it easier for Singaporean travellers to visit Sydney, Australia.
Singaporeans heading to Sydney from the middle of next year have another flying option - Singapore Airlines' (SIA) new budget carrier Scoot. According to the announcement last week, Scoot Airlines indicated that Sydney will be its first global destination, with services between Singapore and Sydney commencing in June, 2012. The direct route between the two cities will end the troubles visitors often encounter by having o transit in Melbourne before arriving in Sydney.
Scoot has promised fares up to 40 percent cheaper than those of premium airlines and will begin flying from Changi, Singapore to Sydney once daily. The airline has also considered widening its reach into Australia, possibly flying to other destinations such as Melbourne, Victoria and Queensland. "Scoot Airlines will enable more people to visit Australia and bring more business for Australian tourism operators," Minister Ferguson said.
Singapore and Sydney saw air passenger traffic of about 1.3 million between them last year. With Asia's growing middle class, Singapore is becoming an increasingly important hub for the Australian tourism industry, which is worth almost $11 billion in tourism expenditure. Currently, Singaporeans have to opt for a full-service airline or make transfers from other Australian cities to get to Sydney. They are hoping to see the value the no-frills carrier can offer.
Scoot's presence in Sydney is likely to boost people travelling to Australia from Singapore and vice versa. "For its part, the Australian Government is proud of its marketing commitment to Scoot's Sydney route through Tourism Australia. More choice is good for passengers and good for the many jobs in Australia that rely on tourism," added he.
Minister Ferguson also stated: "Tourism Australia will continue to work with Scoot Airlines to attract flights to other destinations in Australia." This initiative is one of Australian Government's efforts increasing aviation capacity in order to woo more travellers to come to Australia. Tourism Australia spent $23 million in 2010-11 partnering 14 different airlines on 50 campaigns in 23 markets in cooperative marketing campaigns. $2 million of this number was used specifically to support new route start-ups. For 2011-12, there will be a 40 percent increase in the aviation development fund to $2.8 million.
