A recent announcement has been made by the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Chris Bowen on setting new priority processing arrangements for certain visa applications under skilled migration categories.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship always considers skilled visa applications by order which is called priority processing. All visa applications are considered and finalised by the Minister in an order of priority that depends on what the Minister considers appropriate.
The announcement is a move following the Minister's announcement made on 10 May 2011 about giving the highest priority processing to regional visas. The new priority processing arrangements apply for visa applications under Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) and Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS), as well as for certain General Skilled Migration (GSM).
The new processing priorities which take effect from 1 July 2011 are listed from the highest to the lowest as follows:
- visa applications of skilled migrants under RSMS or applications under Skilled – Regional (subclass 887) category.
- visa applications under the ENS program
- visa applications of migrants nominated by a state or territory government agency for an occupation specified on that agency's state migration plan
- visa applications of migrants nominating an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) – Schedule 1 in effect from 1 July 2011
- all other applications
Priority processing arrangements apply to any current visa applications even if it is in the final stages of processing.
The purpose of priority processing arrangements is to complement other recent changes to skilled migration to ensure that the skilled migration program is responsive to the current economic climate and the economy gets the skilled it currently needs.
