On August 30, 2011, the Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, Senator Kate Lundy, announced funding of $68,900 for the Second Gear project under the 2011- 12 Settlement Grants Program in Tasmania.
The Second Gear project benefits new Australian immigrants and refugees in Tasmania who receive driver education and training under the federally funded program.
According to Senator Lundy, the new project is part of the Living in Australia workshops implemented by the Migrant Resource Centre Southern Tasmania, which is contributing to the successful settlement of new migrants in Australia.
"Projects such as Second Gear are critically important to help new arrivals successfully settle into the Australian community and promote integration and social participation." she said.
Having the same opinion to Senator Lundy, Tasmanian Senator Lisa Singh also expressed her belief in the ability to foster positive relationships between refugees and police, "It should be remembered that many of our humanitarian entrants come from backgrounds where they've learnt not to always trust those exercising authority".
Singh and her Tasmanian counterpart, Carol Brown warmly welcomed the federal funding to assist new arrivals successfully settle in the Hobart community.
"This grant will assist the centre to provide driver education and training to allow our newest citizens with learner drivers' licenses to have the opportunity to become familiar with cars, roads and Australia's road rules in a safe and controlled environment," stated Senator Singh.
