According to new statistics released by Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) yesterday - July 19, 2011, the number of Australian work visas granted for Western Australia (WA) has doubled in the past 12 months.
The statistics showed that the number of 457 visas granted for West Australian businesses had doubled to 9,000 in the past year.
Despite the population of WA makes up only 10 per cent of the entire Australian population, this booming state is now home to 18 per cent of all Australian 457 visa holders. Of these primary visa holders, 27 per cent work in construction and 21 per cent work in mining.
WA's share of permanent employer sponsored permanent migrants is also growing rapidly, increasing from 12 per cent five years ago to 25 per cent in 2009-10.
The boom in mining and other industries has generated labour shortages in Australia. Therefore, Minister of Australian Immigration Department Chris Bowen announced that the number of 457 visas would increase in the coming years.
"The simple fact is that there will not be enough Australian workers to get the job done." he said.
Some projections also suggested that the state would have a shortage of 36,000 workers by 2015.
