The Western Australian (WA) government has called on the federal government to expand the regional skilled migration model that restricts applicants of certain Australian visas to live and work in regional parts of the state.
The majority of Western Australia is now considered 'regional' under the present Australian immigration system and is therefore a viable option for holders of these visas to migrate to. However, Perth and surrounding suburbs are not qualified in the same category. Subsequently, this way makes holders of regional sponsorship (e.g. subclass 475 visa holders) become "off - limits".
Mr Collier, WA Minister of Energy, Training and Workforce Development was particularly critical of the budget measure that allows migrants to be sponsored to go to regional Australia while Perth does not qualify. Currently, the city has shortage of service staff, leading to long queues at restaurants.
"On skilled migration, the federal government dropped the ball on that," he said. "We are not just regional, we are remote."
He also said that the existing budget measures were not sufficient although they have lifted immigration, allowed sponsored regional skilled migration and all-in-one enterprise migration agreements for major resource projects. He wanted changes to a number of immigration measures to allow more skilled and unskilled migration.
"We do not need the federal government to tell us what the problem is when our workforce needs are unique," he added. "We need a huge number of workers of all kinds - unskilled and skilled."
According to a report of Australian Financial Review, WA currently has resources and infrastructure projects worth an estimated AU$225 billion under construction or planned in the state, and concerns are that labour shortages could have an economic impact if workers are not found to meet demand for skills.
A spokesman for the Australian Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said the state government could revise the policy in the future, allowing Perth to be recognized as a possible destination for regional skilled migrants.
