Eighty-five new young immigrants in Calgary, Alberta will receive assistance from the federal Skills Link program and the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society to develop capabilities to find employment.
On behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, Mr. Lee Richardson, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre announced the support of government for an employment program on September 6, 2011.
According to the announcement, young Canadian migrants in Calgary who have difficulties in finding employment will receive job preparation training and work experience through the government support.
Coordinated with the Federal Skills Link Program, the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society will provide eighty-five local youth with skills and experiences required to find a job or the confidence to back to school.
The participants will have a chance to join employability skills workshops in which they will learn about some topics such as job search strategies, resume writing and interview skills. Additionally, new Canadian immigrants can benefit from work placements in the community. In the work placements, participants will also receive coaching from employers and get hands-on experience.
In addition to helping new young immigrants, Skills Link assists aboriginal youth, youth with disabilities, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school. Federal Skills Link funding will also give the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society over $399,000 to support its Bridging Youth to Success program.
Mr. Richardson explained that making the transition to the job market today was challenging to many young Canadian Citizens. This is the main reason why Canada is trying to create opportunities for youth to succeed through support for initiatives like the Bridging Youth to Success program.
