November 7, 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has set a goal to provide the provinces of Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia with a record number of immigrants under the country's Provincial Nominee Program in 2012.
According to CIC plans, Canada will grant 42,000 to 45,000 Canadian visas to applicants under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), including the nominees, their spouses and dependants. More than 36,000 migrants entered Canada under the PNP in 2010 and this years numbers are set to be higher again.
The exact PNP allotments for each participating province in 2012 are still being finalized, yet Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia are planning to accept more provincial nominees with dramatic increases in participation over recent years. In 2011, Manitoba and Alberta each accounted for 24 percent of nominations while British Columbia accounted for 17 percent of nominations in the Provincial Nominee Program.
The statistics also show that the number of Canadian immigrants arriving in the three provinces has increased dramatically. Manitoba's PNP has more than tripled, from around 4,000 people in 2004 to nearly 12,200 people approved in 2010. The growth in Alberta's PNP and British Columbia's PNP were more than 18-fold, and more than eight-fold respectively. Among the three provinces, PNP has contributed 77 percent to the total immigration to Manitoba, where as Alberta and British Columbia is much smaller with 23 percent and 11 percent.
Parliamentary Secretary Hoeppne has stated that "The Government of Canada recognizes the crucial role the Provincial Nominee Program plays in meeting local labour market needs. The Government will continue to work with provinces and territories in order to continue to spread the benefits of economic immigration across the country."
