Montreal, December 9, 2011, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced that the Government is investigating 6,500 people from more than 100 countries for fraudulently attempting to gain citizenship or maintain permanent resident status.
Minister Kenney said that "Canadian citizenship is not for sale". According to him, Canadian people will not accept immigrants who do not follow Canadian rules or lie to become Canadian citizen. People who have obtained Canadian citizenship in a fraudulent way will suffer from a full strength of Canadian law.
At the moment, there are 6,500 people being investigated. Among 6,500 cases, there are 2100 cases violating Canadian citizenship law and 4,400 cases maintaining permanent residency fraudulently. 5 months ago, there were only 1,800 citizens being investigated for citizenship frauds. The number has gone up to more than 2,100 cases.
In terms of residence frauds, of the 4,400 permanent residents having been flagged, there are nearly 1,400 people having withdrawn or abandoned their citizenship application because of new scrutiny. Permanent residents wanting to apply for Canadian citizenship through permanent residency must acquire three years of residence out of four years. In order to retain status as permanent residents, these individuals must be physically present in Canada for two years out of five.
In attempts to solve the citizenship and residence frauds, the Minister stated that: "My department is working closely with the Canada Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Canadian offices abroad to prevent people who are suspected of non-compliance with the permanent residence requirement from being admitted to Canada without proving they meet the requirements and take enforcement action when necessary,". The Minister also encouraged Canadian people to report citizenship fraud by calling the CIC tip line.
