According to a recent global poll, Canada, Australia and Brazil were ranked to have the highest percentage of citizens who found immigration positive.
UK and Irish Research Company Ipsos carried out this study. Its result revealed that Brazil led the poll with 47 percent of respondents saying that immigration benefited Brazilian society. Canada and Australia followed by with 43 percent and 36 percent in turn. On the contrary, Russia had the most negative view on immigration.
The research also found that the more educated people were the more likely they viewed immigration in a positive light. Sixty percent of Canadian Citizens with a higher education believed that immigration in Canada would benefit the society.
Based on the study, economic situation did affect people's views on immigration. People from countries with high unemployment were more likely to be unfavourable to immigration. Therefore, many stricter immigration rules were introduced. However, many commentators said that immigration actually led to more employment and prosperity while tougher immigration controls could lead to more unemployment in the long term.
