The Canadian government has made important contributions to the success of foreign-trained skilled workers in Canada, according to the Foreign Credentials Referral Office's (FCRO) annual report.
The annual report of 18th August revealed that the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) and Health Canada played key roles in cooperating with provinces and territories and other key stakeholders in order to help foreign trained workers with the foreign credential recognition processes.
In response to the report, Mr. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism stated that it was good news for both Canadian immigrants and the country's economy. He also emphasized the importance of newcomers immigrating to Canada being able to use their skills as soon as possible and work in Canada to their full potential.
Foreign skilled workers in Canada in eight targeted occupations would know within a year of applying whether their credentials are recognized. Otherwise, they would be advised what additional courses needed to have their credentials recognized. This process met the commitments of the Pan-Canadian Framework for the Assessment and Recognition of Foreign Qualifications in 2010.
Additionally, with an aim to provide Canadian migrants with full details of foreign credential recognition processes, the Government of Canada together with the Association of Community Colleges, expanded the Canadian Immigrant Integration Program (CIIP) in 2010. Two-day orientation sessions of the program could also help Provincial Nominees, their spouses and working-age dependents to have better understanding of life in Canada, Canadian culture and the labour market. The new Canadian skilled immigrants, therefore, could integrate more quickly into the Canadian labour market and society.
It was estimated that nearly 13,000 applicants had registered for CIIP services and over 9,100 had completed the two-day course by September 2010. 70 per cent of CIIP graduates arriving in Canada found employment despite the economic downturn.
"Foreign-trained workers make an important contribution to Canada's labour market and economy. That’s why Canada's Economic Action Plan invested $50 million to work with partners to improve foreign credential recognition," said Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. "Our government is helping newcomers find meaningful work that contributes to Canada’s overall prosperity."
