The Canadian Medical Association Journal is going to release the first Canadian guidelines to immigrant and refugee health in this week's issue.
Canadian Doctors now have a comprehensive set of guidelines to help care for immigrants to Canada. The guidelines are the achievement of a six-year in-depth study steered by Dr. Kevin Pottie. The study also involved over 150 family doctors, nurse practitioners, researchers and specialists.
According to the study, most Canadian migrants are often healthier than the native-born citizens. However, the "healthy immigrant effect" will decline over time. Therefore, the guidelines which will be released are supposed to provide Canadian doctors with a detailed resource to treat Canadian immigrant patients in spite of their period of stay in Canada.
The guidelines include a summary document, clinical instruction to immigrant health, online case studies and detailed evidence and methodologies. The case studies are based on four major concerns: mental health, infectious diseases, women’s health, and chronic diseases. Additionally, the guidelines also recommend that doctors perform a dental exam to look for broken and missing teeth, cavities, or abscesses, and refer the person to a dentist.
Dr Kevin Pottie, co-author of the Canadian Collaboration for Immigrant and Refugee Health, pointed out that they reviewed the world's evidence to make this one-stop resource for physicians to provide good treatments for immigrants living in Canada. He also added: " We want practitioners to know this is based on 500 pages of evidence, and we want Canadians to know this is not about keeping diseases out of Canada, it's about making sure we keep immigrants part of the productive and healthy population". In other words, the release of these guidelines will help enhance the general well-being of foreigners immigrating to Canada along with native Canadian citizens.
