From August 15, 2011, family members of work permit holders will be granted the right to work in Canada through an 18 month trial visa program, named "Open work permit", in the province of British Columbia.
Under the new program, work rights will be granted for whole families of a Canadian work visa holder including spouses, common law partners and dependents.
An open work permit allows the holder to accept any employment with any employer, omitting restrictions based on labour market needs.
Unlike the previous regulations which usually granted visas to the spouses and common-law partners of migrants employed in a managerial, veteran or learned trade job, the new rules will open up the job market for new arrivals.
"More than a million jobs will open up in BC by 2020, and we will need foreign workers to help meet the skills shortages our businesses are already beginning to face", said Pat Bell, British Columbia Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation.
Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney also announced that the program is part of an initiative to attract more highly skilled workers to the country.
"Since I became Minister, I have heard from workers, employers, labour advocates and others who have asked me to make Canada more welcoming for working families coming to Canada as temporary residents," Kenney said.
The program will finish on February 15, 2013 and up to 1,800 open work permits will be available.
