The province Manitoba is launching a new simpler Canada citizenship guide that will help newcomers better prepare to undertake Canadian citizenship test. This has been recently revealed by Jennifer Howard, Labour and Immigration Minister.
The new guide has garnered praise from Luis Luna, co-coordinator of immigrant resource program at the Portage Learning and Literacy Centre. Luna said that since the new study guide was written in plain English and very easy to understand, this will be of immense help for immigrants in Canada who usually struggle with the language barrier while making their transition to Canadian citizens. Thus, the improved version of Canadian citizenship guide will ease the tough path towards Canadian citizenship for newcomers here.
Based on the 2011 Discover Canada Study Guide, the citizenship study materials for newcomers to Manitoba will be available to instructors, volunteer facilitators and settlement workers across the province for enabling new immigrants prepare fully for the Canadian citizenship test. Newcomers will also be able to use the resource to study on their own before taking the test. The resource includes not only plain-language but also user-friendly study materials and learning activities.
"Becoming a citizen is an important step to becoming a full member of society and provides a great sense of belonging and pride for new Canadians", said Jennifer Howard. The easier Canadian citizenship guide will help newcomers participate actively in the society and become responsible Canada citizens, he maintained. Manitoba is trying best to help them avoid facing difficult things in their Canadian immigration. "Following the recent changes in the citizenship test, we saw it as our responsibility to help", stated he.
The study material was shared by Manitoba at the Canada 2011 Conference held on 30 April in Halifax at with audience at the Teacher of English as a Second Language. The Immigrant Centre also provides citizenship test-preparation classes throughout the year.
Each year, approximately 4,500 newcomers are granted Canada citizenship in Manitoba. Canada has one of the highest naturalization rates in the world, with 85 per cent of immigrants who live and work in Canada becoming citizens.
