According to the latest news from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced the launch of online consultation on immigration levels and mix on August 29, 2011.
The online consultation will focus on the appropriate level of Canadian immigration and the most suitable mix between economic, family class and protected persons.
Immigration has played such an important role in building Canada, which has welcomed 3.5 million Canadian immigrants in the last 15 years, establishing itself as one of the highest per capita rates of permanent immigration in the world.
"The online consultation provides an important opportunity to gather input from stakeholders and the public on key questions facing CIC," Minister Kenney explained.
The questionnaire is considered a crucial component of the cross-country consultations that Minister Kenney and his parliamentary secretaries are currently leading on immigration levels and mix. More than 1,600 people have already signed up to complete the questionnaire. A report on the consultations, including the online questionnaire, will be available in the fall of 2011 or winter 2012.
The Minister also consulted with stakeholders in Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto in July, and planned to have additional sessions in the coming weeks and months. The results of the consultation sessions were fairly good as most of stakeholders viewed current immigration system in a positive light. Participants also appreciated the role of family reunification and the need to address wait times in the parent and grandparent stream.
CIC plans to balance immigration objectives and several other factors such as broader government commitments, input from provinces and territories, and current and future economic conditions. The Department will also consider its ability to process visa applications in a timely manner, as well as the capacity of communities to welcome new Canadian Citizens.
