Premier Christy Clark has recently announced her plan to increase the number of foreign students studying in British Columbia (B.C.) in the coming years as a way to bolster the provincial economy.
The initiative is a part of her "Jobs Plan" to promote Canadian immigration and provide a boost to the economy of B.C. It is aimed to help the province add as many as 9,000 jobs and put another USD$500 million into the economy over the next four years by attracting more international students from key countries like China, India, Saudi Arabia and Brazil.
According to recent figures, Clark maintained that the presence of foreign students in B.C. has resulted in the creation of 22,000 new Canadian jobs and increased contributions to the B.C. economy. There are currently about 94,000 international students in B.C., and last year those students collectively spent about USD$1.8 billion. Hence, The BC Jobs Plan aims to increase the number of international students in B.C. by 50 percent over the next four years.
The plan also includes provision for establishing an international education council to promote B.C to overseas students. The new council will use trade offices abroad to build stronger relationships with other countries and help connect international students to B.C's educational opportunities.
Other measures include working with communities to prepare them to welcome students from abroad, strengthening the province's Education Quality Assurance and sending more B.C. students overseas to prepare them to work in a global economy.
Under the plan, the Province will have a multi-pronged approach to ensure that British Columbians get the education and skills training they need to work in the communities where they live and study. Currently, post-secondary education is funded nearly USD$2 billion annually and skills development/job training receives over USD$500 million every year. Clark stated that a full International Education Strategy will be released later this year.
