Canadian political leaders have made efforts to gain trust from Indo-Canadians just a few days before Canadian parliamentary elections on May 2 by promising to accelerate immigration process and grant more student visas for Indians.
A "comprehensive relationship with India" is what top leaders of the opposition Liberal Party promised at a roundtable organized by the Canada-India Foundation (CIF). According to these leaders, their party government will improve the bilateral relationship beyond trade to boost immigration and tourism from India, as well as to foster deeper education and research cooperation.
John McCallum, MP from the Toronto suburb of Markham-Unionville, emphasized that Australia was "eating Canada's lunch'' in attracting Indians to come and study. There are currently about 3,500 Indians studying in Canada while Australia receives over 40,000 Indian students annually. Hence, he suggested that the federal government must make the policies on Canadian visa and work friendlier, as well as more visas should be granted for Indian students.
Sharing the same point of view, Rob Oliphant, MP from the Toronto constituency of Don Valley West, promised that his party government would reduce wait times for the family class immigration category from 11-13 years now to five to six years.
At this roundtable, most political leaders recognized the important role of the Indian diaspora in this bilateral tie. Bengali-origin Rana Sarkar from the Toronto constituency of Scarborough Rouge River, said that based on past history, his Liberal Party has "the DNA for dealing with India and now there is need for India 2.0 engagement strategy.'' Besides, Maria Minna, MP from the Toronto constituency of Beaches-East York, emphasized the need for serious engagement of the Indian diaspora for deepening Canada-India relations.
