According to Canada's Immigration Minister Jason Kenney speech in The Vancouver Board of Trade last Tuesday, Canada will accept a record-high 40,000 provincial nominee immigrants in 2011.
The estimated figure is five times more than Canada's PNP intake for 2005. In 2010, there were 36,428 Canadian migrants accepted under the nominee program.
The Provincial Nomination Program (PNP) is a program that allows provinces to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and who are interested in settling in a particular province of Canada. The requirements for the program are based on the economic needs of each province. Immigrants who migrate in Canada under the Provincial Nominee Program must have the skills, education and work experience necessary to make an immediate economic contribution to the province or territory that nominates them.
The conference reported that less than 30 per cent of Canadian immigrants were economic immigrants, selected on basis of their necessary skills or arranged employment offer.
Additionally, Kenney also put an emphasis on the importance of the provincial nominee program to Canada. He said that Canada needed to increase immigration numbers as a solution to an aging population and shrinking labour force.
A recent study revealed that Canada needed to increase immigration levels from 250,000 to more than one million annually to maintain country's current age ratio.
