Aiming to crack down on fraudulent marriages, the Canadian government has proposed a stricter requirement which would require a person coming to stay in Canada with their partner to stay in the relationship for two years or more before formally being granted permanent residence.
According to the new proposal, overseas spouses or partners would only be granted conditional permanent residenceif they have been in a relationship with their Canadian partners for less than two years.
"Conditional permanent residence" of the newcomers could also be revoked if they failed to stay in the relationship, or it can be shown that it is not a genuine relationship.
On Saturday, March 26, 2011, a federal notice published by the Canadian government just before the election writ said that this stricter requirement would "send a message that Canada is taking a strong stance against marriage fraud, and immigration fraud in general."
This new rule is similar to the current law of different countries such as The United States, Britain and Australia.
The Canadian government has also proposed to introduce a "sponsorship bar". This would prevent those who gained entry to Canada themselves as sponsored partners and spouses from sponsoring a new partner for five years.
