According to a study released on Tuesday - June 7, 2011 by Statistics Canada, migrants are able to retain their mother tongue thanks to Canada's family-focused immigration policy.
The statistics revealed that there are 55 percent of children born in Canada to immigrant parents retained their parents' native language while this figures was 41 percent in the year of 1981.The increase is result of stronger family structures in Canada.
"The most important factor is the extent to which children are exposed to those languages within the family," the report stated.
Focusing on family reunification, a Canadian immigration policy between 1980 and 2000 allowed full family units, including parents and grandparents, to immigrate to Canada.
70 percent of children retained their parents' native languages including Armenian, Punjabi, Chinese, Persian, Turkish, Bengali and Urdu. Children from families speaking languages based on Dutch, Italian, Creole and Tagalog averaged less than 20 per cent.
