A recent nationwide survey from the Montreal-based Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) shows that immigrants to Canada claim a stronger knowledge of the country's history than those who were born there.
Over 2,300 people joined the poll for a year-end report to find out respondents' perspectives on Canada's history, including how they assess their own command of the subject.
According to the survey, about 82 percent of respondents who were born outside of Canada claimed to have "very strong" or "somewhat strong" knowledge of Canadian history while only about 70 percent of those who were born in Canada defined their historical knowledge strong or very strong. Most surprising is that among the people describing their history knowledge as "very strong", the number of Canadian immigrant respondents (27 percent) is nearly double that of the born-in-Canada citizens (16 percent).
Migrants are more likely to claim a solid command of Canadian history because they have been required to familiarize and integrate themselves into the Canadian communities as part of the process of gaining citizenship, Jack Jedwab, ACS executive director says. He also speculates that immigrants may be more attuned to the story of Canada's growth and evolution because of their direct connection to the country's multicultural identity, which Jedwab says "is becoming the dominant narrative in Canadian history. They see themselves as part of this."
Last year, under the direction of Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, the 63-page Discover Canada citizenship guide was updated as part of an effort to support new Canadians learn about Canada's past. The federal department emphasizes under the "The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship" section that "Whether we are citizens by birth or by choice, we should all learn about our history, heritage and citizenship".
