A proposed tax incentive program for Ontario businesses to hire new Canadian immigrants was announced at the Liberal Party's platform on September 5, 2011.
According to the new program proposed by Premier Dalton McGuinty, employers will be offered a $10,000 tax credit if they hire Canadian immigrants who have been in Ontario for less than five years.
Ontario Liberal candidate Mark MacDonald said the program was inspired by the complaints of new Canadian migrants who find it difficult to get work skilled experience in Ontario.
"The program is for immigrants that are having trouble finding a job in their specialized field," Mr. MacDonald added, "They need the work experience. Some of them are working low paying jobs that are not in their field."
Mr. McGuinty who planned the program also emphasized the need to help new immigrants coming to Canada to get their desired work experience in the country.
It is estimated that there are a large number of immigrants with high skills and educational qualifications immigrating to Canada every year. The plan therefore will help new Canadian citizens to get a one-year training opportunity in any business or workplace, informed Mr. McGuinty.
Especially, the program will target at professions that Ontario is lacking, such as occupations in medical field. Immigrants who have high skills including accountants and lawyers are also preferred.
In addition to the tax incentive program for Ontario business, Ontario Liberals are also giving a promise of offering a break of 30 percent on college and tuition fees with an aim to promote recruitment of Canadian immigrant workers.
