UFCW Canada has called for greater transparency and accountability of the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (CSAWP) to ensure the rights of Mexican migrant farm workers in Canada.
UFCW Canada is Canada's largest private sector union with more than 250,000 members across the country.
Various Mexican legislators, including the Confederacion Nacional Campesina (CNC, Mexico's largest farm workers union), prominent members of the labour movement, academics and migrant workers have joined UFCW Canada's campaign for greater transparency and accountability of the CSAWP, a temporary agriculture workers program managed by the Canadian federal government.
The campaign for migrant worker justice is building momentum in Mexico and Canada.
Leader of the CNC, Mr. Gerardo Sanchez, has presented a motion in the Senate requesting the Mexican Minister of Labour to inform the Congress about allegations of anti-union activities against Canadian migrant farm workers who come to Canada through CSAWP.
He also asked for complete and transparent report regarding the protection given to Mexican farm workers in Canada by the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The campaign's goal is to make sure that both Mexican and Canadian government can prevent illegal anti-union practices, and respect the fundamental association rights of foreign workers in Canada.
