The finalized details of UK student visa changes have been announced in a statement of changes to the Immigration Rules by the UK Home Office.
Together with a new set of requirements for sponsoring educational institutions and tighter monitoring of existing visa holders, the changes mean thatTier 4 student visa applicants will face tighter restrictions.
Higher English language requirements and new accreditation criteria for sponsoring educational institutions (requiring many sponsors to re-apply for accreditation) will be introduced in the first set of changes that come in to force from 21 April 2011.
In the next changes scheduled for July 2011, sponsors of foreign students who wish to change courses must report on the academic progress of the students and students must prove they have the funds to support their stay in the UK . Additionally, unless dependants are studying a certain level for 12 months or more, they will not be allowed to join a foreign student.
Further changes to the duration of student visas and the closure of the Tier 1 - Post Study Work visa are expected to be announced in April, 2012.
These changes are the result of a combination of several months of government research and consultation conducted late last year. The government at that time showed that the changes were designed to prevent the UK visa system from being abused and ensure only the best and brightest were allowed to study in the UK.
