The number of UK work visa applications has dropped sharply after new immigration rules came into effect early last month. About seventy five percent of the initial allowance from UK Border Agency for UK work permits for skilled workers has been left unused.
It seems to be baseless when employers have been worried that new immigration visa cap for skilled workers would prevent employees with talent from coming to the UK because the visa allocation for the first month is spare.
The agency originally set aside 4,200 certificates of sponsorship for skilled workers so that companies can obtain Tier 2 work permits in anticipation of a large number of applications. This reduced the subsequent allocations to 1,500 visas.
According to UK Border Agency figures cited by the Financial Times, however, only 1,028 of these certificates were granted in April. The remaining visa allocation of April will be carried over into the next month's allocation.
The fact that the number of work visa applications was lower than expected is quite contrary to the attitude of British enterprises when the UK immigration cap was announced. However, according to many UK immigration experts, the poor take-up is a sign of confusion among enterprises about the new cap.
"I don't think it means there is a lack of demand. A lot of employers held back because they were concerned (about the system) and so the jury is still out", said Julia Onslow-Cole, head of immigration at PwC Legal. Ms Onslow-Cole also added that the number of work visa applications could increase significantly in May when companies become more comfortable with the new system and implement their own strategic plans.
