While native people in some regions in UK such as Midlands, Wales appeared to be most supportive of cuts to immigration, Londoners and Scots are the most likely to want more immigration, according to study by Oxford University’s Migration Observatory.
The survey was conducted by Ipsos Mori of 1,000 people on their attitudes to UK immigration for the Migration Observatory.
According to the results, a majority in almost all areas of the UK is in favour of cuts to immigration. However, Londoners living in the most densely populated and diverse area of the country are the least likely to support cuts.
Statistics from the survey showed that only 46 percent of Londoners wanted less immigration, a third wanted to remain at current level and approximately 8 percent wanted to see more immigrants to the UK.
The study by the Migration Observatory also indicated white British Londoners were less likely to support immigration cuts than white Britons elsewhere although almost a third of people who live in the capital were born abroad.
In addition to Londoners, the number of Scots who supported a lot more immigration accounted for 20 percent. Even at the lower end of that scale, there was still far more Scots in favour of more immigration than other parts of the UK.
Dr Scott Blinder of the Migration Observatory added: "London and Scotland have lower levels of opposition to immigration than the Midlands and Wales, but this doesn’t seem to be clearly related to the number of UK migrants in any of these places."
