December 20, 2011, the UK and Ireland are going to sign an agreement to help solve illegal immigrants, according to an announcement from their ministers at a meeting in Dublin.
The ministers have stated that closer cooperation between the two countries could help clamp down on illegal immigrants. Under the new deal, the UK and Ireland will share information about visa applicants, including fingerprint biometrics and biographical details. This is considered a positive move to assist in the visa-issuing process and could save a considerable cost if the deal is approved.
Other issues including joint entry standards and ultimately enhanced electronic border systems will also be discussed at a meeting between the UK immigration minister Damian Green and the Irish counterpart Alan Shatter in Dublin.
There will be a new system which can help recognize people who are not qualified to enter the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man before they arrive at the border. Visa applicants' information will be shared between the two countries so that illegal immigrants and spurious asylum claims can be prevented. It is estimated that 500 applicants among the 1,516 failed asylum claims which were made this year in Ireland have been considered either "asylum shoppers" with previous asylum applications to the UK or visa applicants by the UKBA.
Apart from preventing illegal immigration and fraud asylum claims, a new deal between the two countries can reinforce their commitment to preserving the Common Travel Area (CTA) which consists of Ireland, Britain, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
Mr. Green indicated, "This agreement will help us quickly refuse those with poor immigration records, identify asylum shoppers and speed up the removal process in those cases where people have entered the CTA". Responding to the agreement, Mr. Shatter expected the agreement to provide a platform for greater co-operation on immigration matters, including joint action to protect the CTA.
