The changes to UK student visa released late last month will be taken effected from April 21, 2011. This new set of rules will make it tougher for students to qualify for a visa.
Students will face tougher eligibility requirements because the minimum English level will be increased and educational institutions will face greater scrutiny, requiring approval as "highly trusted" by inspectors in order to be eligible to sponsor students.
After arriving in the UK, students will be also affected by the rule changes. Their time of studying will be limited to 5 years, while most visa holders are no longer allowed to bring dependents, with the exception being post-graduate and government-sponsored students.
The UK Border Agency explained the reasoning behind the UK student visa changes in a statement announced in April 21 2011.
"The aim of the revised Rules is to deliver a strong migration system which tackles immigration abuse, while allowing genuine students to study at genuine colleges," quoted from the statement.
The new set of changes is the latest in an on-going effort to control migration to the UK, and follows the introduction of a cap on UK work visas earlier this month.
