In an effort to ensure the UK is not a "soft touch" for illegal workers, Immigration Minister Damian Green announced on December 6, 2011 that it will soon give employers access to a new service that allows them to check a UK immigrants' visa details online.
The scheme, which comes into operation from spring 2012, will make it easier for employers to carry out checks to know whether foreign nationals have the right to work in the UK and hire skilled staff in good faith. Firms will be able to go online to verify that the details contained on a foreign employee's biometric residence permit (BRP) are correct. It will help companies avoid facing problems renewing their licenses or the large fines imposed for employing immigrants from outside the EU who have forged or invalid UK work permits.
Damian Green said: "It is vital that we work with employers to give them the tools they need to meet their obligations". He also indicated that new online checking service will also turn up the pressure on those who wish to live and work in the country illegally. "The message is clear - the UK is no longer a soft touch for illegal workers", stressed the Minister.
Since biometric residence permits were introduced in late 2008, around 600,000 BRPs have been issued and from early next year they will be extended to cover all those applying from inside the country to remain here for more than 6 months. It will also be issued to more UK visa categories of foreign nationals, including refugees and those granted UK permanent settlement.
BRPs are issued to non-EEA nationals with permission to remain in the UK for more than 6 months with a biometric pass consisting of fingerprint, photographic and identity data held on a secure chip. They are really simplifying the process of checking an individual's right to work by replacing the wide range of documents currently in use.
The new online checking service for employers will enable quick and easy real-time checks on permits and their holder's identity and right to work in the UK. It is an important step forward in the fight against UK immigration abuse and illegal working.
