According to a report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), more permanent migrants moved to UK than any other country in EU.
OECD comprises 34 of the world's richest and most influential countries, barring China, India and Russia. According to its 2011 International Migration Outlook report, there were approximately 397,900 people immigrating to UK permanently in 2009.
UK had the second highest intake of migrants in the OECD. It was also amongst the top seven of OECD countries that had increase in number of immigrants.
Result of the report informed that UK had experienced the second-highest rise in the number of immigrants living permanentlys. It increased by 14 per cent from 2008 to 2009. The study also mentioned that this increase resulted from rise in UK family visas and UK student visas. However, the actual number of UK permanent immigrants could be below the figures released because it included tens of thousands of temporary foreign workers. Foreign workers in UK are not permitted to stay in the country over 1 year.
In response to the figures, UK's Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said this report confirmed that even during the recession, jobs were held by UK migrant workers while other countries had seen a decline in migrant labour. He added that immigration rules must be tightened to stop too many Britons being out of work.
