Despite the riots in several areas near London, Malaysian students were encouraged to continue their studies in the UK, Britain's acting High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ray Kyles, said on Thursday.
There are about 13,500 Malaysian students studying in the UK. As scheduled, international students will return to the UK next month to begin the new academic year.
According to Mr Kyles, Malaysian students planning on studying in the UK in the new academic year are advised to consult authorities in Malaysia and the UK on the latest developments pertaining to the riot situation.
Whilst Mr Kyles stated that "We have 16,000 policemen on the streets in London and the situation is under control," in a news conference recently, he also suggested that visitors and students to the UK should stay away from troubled areas.
Mr Kyles also talked about recent changes to the Tier 4 student visa program to the UK and its impact on Malaysian students. He gave assurances that the changes would have limited impact on Malaysian students thanks to the strong reputation and quality of Malaysian degree-level and post-graduate students in the UK.
He also revealed that the number of student visa applicants from Malaysia is expected to increase starting next week.
