Aiming at helping refugees and displaced people living in the UK, the government has introduced new program named "Giving is winning" to bring hope to them through sports in the run-up to London 2012.
"Giving is Winning" is a joint program held by the UNHCR, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Through this program, organizers expect to collect at least 100,000 items of sports and casual clothes for refugees and displaced immigrating to UK and ones around the world.
The campaign follows two successful previous editions during the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Games. IOC President Jacques Rogge said 'This campaign is an excellent example of how sport can bring joy to people living very difficult lives, as well as to people who give. Let's make a difference to the lives of thousands of men, women, and children, just like sport has made a difference to our lives.'
There is nothing new about refugees and immigration to UK except the increasing trend during economic crisis. There are about 69,000 refugee children living in the UK from many countries and backgrounds. Some of them are adopted by good families. Some are suffering terrible scenes of violence and horror.
LOCOG Deputy Chair Sir Keith Mills also said this was a fantastic program and he was very proud that London 2012 would play its part in making "Giving is winning" a real success. It could help spread the Olympic Spirit to motivate refugees to make changes in their life in UK.
